How to Type Kanji


  1. Go to: the Apple Icon -> System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Input Sources.
  2. Click the + at the bottom left.
  3. Choose Japanese on the left, choose Hiragana Google on the right, click Add.
  4. Put a checkbox next to “Show Input menu in menu bar.”

You can switch to the Japanese keyboard by clicking the Flag (or keyboard symbol) that now appears in the menu bar. You’re done! To create a shortcut of switching between the two keyboards easily, following the next steps.

  1. Click on the Shortcuts tab or go to: the Apple Icon -> System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts.
  2. On the left choose Input Sources. The current shortcuts are displayed on the right.
  3. To update the shortcuts, double click on the right and press the new shortcut key combination. It’s a good idea to make sure it doesn’t conflict with an existing shortcut, for example Control-Option-Space (⌃⌥Space) is a good shortcut.
  1. Windows symbol -> Gear icon (Settings) -> Time & Language
  2. Choose Region & language -> Add a language.
  3. Choose Japanese, click Next.
  4. Deselect the Set as my Windows display language checkbox.
  5. Click install.

You can change the input language by clicking the language at the bottom right of the screen or by pressing Windows + Space.

  1. Start (or the Windows symbol) -> Control Panel
  2. Change keyboards or other input methods -> Change keyboards or other input methods (yes, twice)
  3. Keyboard and Languages (tab) -> Change keyboards -> Add
  4. Find Japanese, choose Microsft IME (for example), click OK, click OK (yes, twice).

You can change the input language by clicking the language at the bottom right of the screen or by pressing the left ALT button and the Shift key.

  1. Go to the Play Store. Search for japanese keyboard.
  2. Choose Google Japanese Input and install it.
  3. In the keyboard settings under Languages add a Japanese keyboard and choose QWERTY (and 12 keys if you like).

To switch keyboards press the globe icon at the bottom left of any the keyboard when it’s available.

To get to the keyboard settings,

  1. Settings -> General Management -> Gboard settings -> Languages.
  2. Add keyboard.
  1. Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Keyboards -> Add New Keyboard.
  2. Choose Japanese
  3. Choose Romaji (and Kana if you like). Click done.
